Think Twice: Our Philosophy

Why we started this channel, and why you might want to think twice before buying a van.

Don’t Just Buy. Think First.

There’s a moment most future vanlifers have experienced. You’re scrolling Instagram at midnight, coffee cooling beside you, and you see it: some stranger’s perfectly filtered van parked beside a mountain lake at sunrise. The caption reads something like “Just quit my job, sold everything, and bought this beauty. Best decision ever!”

Here’s what the algorithm doesn’t show you: that same person three months later, realizing their shower plans won’t work, their electrical system is undersized by half, and the bed they thought was “cozy” is actually just “cramped.”

That’s why we called this channel Think Twice.

Not because we want to talk you out of building a campervan. Quite the opposite. But we believe in thinking first. Planning before purchasing. Understanding the tradeoffs before cutting the first piece of plywood.

Building a van is a major financial decision that you’ll live inside. It’s not like buying a car you don’t like and trading it in three years later. A custom build is personal. It has to fit you, your family, your actual needs, not your imagined Instagram self.

So yes, think twice. Then think a third time. The thinking isn’t hesitation. It’s respect for the project.

Family as Co-Builders

This isn’t my project. It’s ours.

Our daughters aren’t passengers waiting for the build to finish. They’ve been camera crew since day one. They’ve asked questions I didn’t know the answers to. They’ve spotted problems in the layout that I missed. They’ve reminded me, more than once, that this van needs to work for them too.

When we started talking about building a campervan, we made a decision: everyone contributes. Everyone learns. Everyone has a say in what works and what doesn’t.

The Goal: Teach, Learn, and Journey Together

Here’s what we promise on this website: we’re learning out loud.

We don’t have all the answers. We haven’t built twenty vans and memorized every technique. What we have is enthusiasm, research, and a willingness to share the mistakes as we make them.

This channel isn’t just a build log. It’s a story. Three years of searching for the right van. The false starts. The wrong vehicles. The “almost bought it” moments. And eventually the road trips where all this work pays off.

Our Build Philosophy: Function Over Perfection

One more thing before we dive in: we care more about function than perfection.

You’ll see rough edges in our build. Caulking that isn’t camera-ready. Plywood with visible screws. Solutions that work but aren’t Pinterest-worthy. That’s intentional.

We’re time-poor, like most families. We can’t spend months chasing perfect joinery when a simple solution works. The goal is a van that takes us camping, not a van that wins design awards.

A van you actually finish is infinitely better than a van you abandon because the finish carpentry is too overwhelming.
